OUTDOOR SKILLS KAMP

Outdoor Skills I
Outdoor Skills II

Overview

The Outdoor Skills program at Kamp Kiwanis provides a summer camp experience for youth finishing grade 7 - 9. The camp session lasts for 7 days and focuses on expanding outdoor skills. There are two different sessions for Outdoor Skills at Kamp Kiwanis that are dependent upon age.

Outdoor Skills I

Outdoor Skills I is designed for youth finishing grades 7 - 8 and lasts 7 days.

The goal of Outdoor Skills I (OSI) is to provide a transition experience for our summer campers that bridges their 'camper' experience as senior, junior, or intermediate campers, with leadership training and service. We want participants to develop a sense of service to the camp community while participating in adventurous, fun camp activities. OSI includes an 2 day hike up the Elbow River valley walking from the Kamp Kiwanis site; camp service work; plus an assortment of fun in-camp activities. Selection to the OSI program is based on 'leadership potential' as articulated by applicants in the nomination form. This experience (new as of 2007) is part of the core Kamp Kiwanis summer camp programs. There is a fee for service and open registration for this program, but scholarships of up to 100% are available to every camper where ability to pay is a barrier to participation. All senior campers from the previous summer program will be invited to apply for the OSI program. As an open registration program, applicants who have not attended Kamp Kiwanis in the past can also apply to attend.

Outdoor Skills II

Outdoor Skills II is designed for youth finishing grades 8 - 9 and lasts 7 days.

The goal of Outdoor Skills II (OSII) is to provide a facilitated group wilderness travel experience. We want Outdoor Skills II Participants (OSPs) to develop competencies in traveling in Kamp Kiwanis' wilderness travel areas, including adjacent wild areas at Kamp Kiwanis. Participants are involved with a 2 day Elbow River Valley wilderness hike; mountain biking and camp service projects. OSPs also spend time participating in some 'in-camp' experiences such as arts and crafts, swimming and canoeing. OSII participants can expect to further the skills they learned in Outdoor Skills I.

There is a fee for service and open registration for this program, but scholarships of up to 100% are available to every camper where ability to pay is a barrier to participation.

How To Attend

Kamp Kiwanis leadership program registrations are nomination based. Just like the main program anyone can nominate a youth for the leadership programs, however the main criteria is different for our leadership programs. When the selection committee goes through the leadership program nomination forms they are looking closely at the candidates leadership potential.

You can find the appropriate nomination form in the sidebar.

The nomination forms are due by the date listed on the nomination forms. Once the forms are collected a selection committee comprised of Kiwanians and Kamp Kiwanis staff will sort through the nomination forms and select the participants with the greatest leadership potential. Once the kampers are selected a health and permission package will be mailed to selected kampers families in early June.

Unfortunately there are only a certain amount of spots available and sometimes it is necessary to create a wait list for campers. Often spots become available up to and including the first day of the session.
