EARTH SUPERHEROES

Overview
An environmental learning program recommended for Grade 3 students.
Earth Superheroes is an environmental learning program appropriate for all ages of elementary school children including Grade three students. The activities focus specifically on three areas of the grade 3 Alberta Science Program of Studies: Animal life cycles, hearing and sound, and rocks and minerals; though there are also many other multi-grade cross curricular links.
In a unique blend of 'camp' style fun and engaging environmental learning, students receive a letter from 'Captain Earth' encouraging them to become trained as Earth Superheroes to help defeat 'Doctor Destructoid' with knowledge about how life works on earth. Students participate in a theatre production at a wetland called 'Stages of Life'. Next they become realtors and decide on future developments of a natural area. Students learn about soil creation while participating in an interesting soil kitchen. Finally students are immersed in a forest of sound where they appreciate the many sections of nature's symphony. Many of the activities used such as the 'soil sinks' and the forest of sound activity come from The Institute for Earth Education (IEE). IEE creates many excellent environmental learning programs including Sunship Earth and Sunship III.
