EXPLORING THE LOWER FOOTHILLS

Overview
An environmental learning program recommended for Grade 2 students.
Exploring the Lower Foothills is an environmental learning program appropriate for many ages of primary school children including Grade two students. Students are immersed in the natural world of small crawling and flying critters. They go on a bug safari focusing on terrestrial insects. Students then focus on birds while engaged in an interesting bird study. The pond study is a fascinating look at the diversity found in each of three wetlands; a fen, a pond, and a stream. Wood frogs are often found in various stages of development. Students also learn about the forces of types of erosion on riverbeds.
Some of the activities used such as the 'bug safari' come from The Institute for Earth Education (IEE). IEE creates many excellent environmental learning programs including Sunship Earth and Sunship III.
